The game itself is free; but the Community Managers, Game Devs, Accountants, Lawyers, Marketing, HR, everyone has to get a paycheck, and that's where the pay2win folk come in.
But on the gameplay (FUN) side of things, this strategy will ultimately lead to the death of the game over a long enough time frame.
